For many years while I was teaching English, I felt that there must be some simpler way to teach the tenses than just following the textbooks and giving exercises to do. Then going over the exercises in class.

I come from a design background. In design, there is a basic tenet that form must follow function. I felt dissatisfied with the piecemeal explanation of the tenses that I found in textbooks. There was no overall view and I found most explanations rather wordy.

Then one day I stumbled on something online. It seemed to explain the tenses in a far more holistic way. I immediately decided to use it in my lessons. I had to adapt it slightly as I didn't have the same materials and tools. As soon as I started using it I felt I had the key I had been looking for all those years.

Over the years I have modified and refined this methodology, based mainly on student feedback, and to make it as easy and flexible to use for all levels of students.
